Performing Arts
Drama is a mode of emotional expression that is usually represented in theatrical performances. The word originated from the Greek vocabulary which means action, which in turn, was derived from the words, ‘to do’.
The inclusion of drama as part of a pupil’s learning has several significant reasons. One reason why drama is important is because it hones a pupil’s ability to respond to new and unexpected circumstances. It allows a pupil to be spontaneous and make amends for any sudden upsurge of events. Another reason why drama is important is because it helps explore thoughts, feelings and emotions. It also focuses on communication and understanding yourself and others.
The Performing Arts Department makes up one section of the Creative Faculty at Goole Academy. We have a fully equipped performance space in the main hall with lighting and sound as well as classrooms. The studio is often used for small, intimate performances such as productions for coursework as well as extra-curricular performances. The school musical is staged in the main hall with access to top of the range lighting and sound equipment.
All KS3 pupils benefit from one Performing Arts lesson a week and BTEC Performing Arts is offered at KS4 which is a popular course within the Academy.
Drama creates a safe atmosphere for expression of what a person thinks and feels. Adding to that, drama is important because it brings out the real self of a person through how experiences affect the person. More so, drama builds confidence, develops interpersonal skills and allows pupils to learn from the real-life drama that each person experiences.
Drama profoundly influences a person’s life and is deemed to play a significant role in dealing with real life issues and concerns.
We encourage pupils to see as much live theatre as they can with most theatre companies offering generous discounts to students. We regularly take groups to see modern and challenging performances such as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, as well as taking extra-curricular trips to theatres such as The Crucible for talks with Producers and to take back stage tours.
We also aim to provide the opportunity to take part in workshops with industry professionals, some previously offered have been contemporary dance with Northern School Contemporary Dance, Devising and Brecht workshops with Splendid Productions and Physical Theatre workshops with Manic Chord Theatre.
The Performing Arts department also run a range of extra-curricular activities including small and large scale productions and have previously taken part in dance festivals that gives pupils opportunities to perform alongside students from other schools!
